Thief River Falls - Sylvester Novak, 81, of Thief River Falls, formerly of Greenbush, died Sunday, Nov. 20 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, November 25, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Greenbush, with Father Urban Figge, OMI, officiating. Casket bearers included Tim and Robert Truscinski, Dale Mekash, Felix Korczak, John Chrzanowski and Ronald Mooney. Interment was held at Blessed Sacrament Cemetery.
Sylvester Novak, the son of Joseph and Stella (Chrzanowski) Novak, was born June 17, 1924 on the family farm in Roseau County, just north of Leo (rural Greenbush). He attended rural School District 15, near Leo. He farmed with his parents. He learned to play the accordian when he was young. He formed his own dance band when he was 17 and played for many years in the local area.
He married June Owen on Nov. 15, 1951 in Greenbush. They moved to Milwaukee, Wis., and lived there for 20 years where he played in his band and drove truck. He delivered furniture in the Milwaukee area and also delivered welding equipment and supplies for Ace Welding of Milwaukee.
In 1971 they returned to Greenbush where they owned and operated Novak’s Market until September 1986. Syl also drove school bus for the Greenbush School District for 26 years. Syl and June were caregivers for June’s sister Alice for many years. June died on Nov. 30, 1991. Syl continued to care for Alice until her death in 2001.
Syl moved to Thief River Falls a couple of years ago and was a resident at Valley Home.
He is survived by many cousins; two godchildren, Dale Mekash and Barb Befus; two good friends, Leona Truscinski of Greenbush and Eunice Novak of Thief River Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife June; and sister-in-law Alice Owen.
