Thief River Falls - Oscar Mossestad, 92, died Friday, November 11, 2005 at his home in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November 14, at Zion Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls, with Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Casket bearers included Oscar’s grandsons: Dale Mossestad, Brad Mossestad, Paul Konickson, Jerod Konickson, Randy Konickson and Steven Johnson. Interment will be held at Oak Ridge Lutheran Cemetery in rural Thief River Falls.
Oscar Lewis Mossestad was born August 27, 1913 in Numedahl Township, Pennington County, the son of Julius and Anna (Brateng) Mossestad. He was baptized August 31, 1913 and confirmed November 27, 1927 at Oak Ridge Lutheran Church. He attended country school in Pennington County. Oscar enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps, on January 5, 1935. He was stationed in Bena. After his honorable discharge on July 23, 1935, he went to Fort Peck, Mont., and worked on the dam.
On March 18, 1939, Oscar was united in marriage to Ruby Anderson in St. Hilaire.
He farmed in Numedahl Township. In 1945, the couple moved to Wyandotte Township, Pennington County, where he farmed and did carpentry work. In 1952, Oscar drove to Anchorage, Alaska, where he did carpentry work for a few months. In 1969, they sold their farm and moved to Thief River Falls, where he became caretaker at Skylite Apartments until he retired in 1980. Oscar married Edna Wendel, July 12, 1980 in Thief River Falls.
Oscar was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls. He served on the School Board, District 125, Wyandotte Township Board and served on the church council at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Plummer, MN, his former church. He was an avid outdoor sportsman, who enjoyed trapping, hunting geese and deer, fishing and camping. After retirement, he built spinning wheels, chairs, tables, etc. He enjoyed working with wood.
Oscar is survived by wife, Edna of Thief River Falls; four children, Carole (Vernon) Konickson of Red Lake Falls, Sharon (Larry) Efteland of Thief River Falls, Orvis (Donna) Mossestad of Plummer and Arlys (Roger) Konickson of Plummer; three stepchildren, Sharon (Bill) Hoglo of Thief River Falls, James (Farryle) Wendel of Grimes, Iowa, and John (Barbara) Wendel of Lino Lakes; 11 grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 12 step-great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one great-great-step-grandchild; two brothers, Donald (Mona) Mossestad of Oroville, Calif., and Stanley (Eunice) Mossestad of Apache Junction, Ariz.; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby in 1978; a daughter in infancy; parents; sisters, Hilda Cater, Louise Battenfeld, Agnes Selvog and Lillian Braun; brothers, Art, George, Oliver and Vernon Mossestad.
