Long Prairie - Robert Vernon Knutson, 76, formerly of Thief River Falls, died October 18, 2005 at Long Prairie Memorial Nursing Home in Long Prairie, after a short battle with cancer.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, Nov. 5, in Cook.
“Bob” was born July 29, 1929, in Hibbing, to Henry and Lena (Ness) Knutson and lived in Cook, most of his life. He married Marvelle Benson on August 11, 1951, in Cook, where they lived on the family farm west of Cook and raised their six children. His career in carpentry started with, and included his employment with Charlie Pohl of Cook, a contracting business with Lawrence Heglund called K & H Builders, and also during that time a period of self employment.
In 1969, the family moved to Thief River Falls when Bob became an instructor of carpentry at the Thief River Falls Area Vocational Technical Institute. He worked there for 16 years when he retired and moved back to Cook. Because they had sold their home there, they built an earth-sheltered home on the property where they lived until seeking cancer care for Bob in Long Prairie this past spring.
During his years of teaching and many years after retirement, he, his wife and many family members spent summers on Crane Lake on a houseboat which he had built, and later at their cabin on Little Vermillion River. Winters saw Bob and Marvelle traveling to warmer climates and eventually being winter residents in Mission, Tex.
Bob had many interests, which included music. He loved to listen to and to sing barber shop quartet music. He was a member of the “Ambassadors,” a men’s chorus in Texas, which performed all over southern Texas. He continued to dabble in woodworking, making many Christmas gifts for his children and grandchildren. In his early years, he raised horses, helped establish the Northland Saddle Club and even was a pick-up man at rodeos. He was a voracious reader. His favorite author by far was Louis L’ Amour. He has passed on his passion for music, horses, woodworking and reading to many of his children. Bob and Marvelle celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with friends, neighbors and relatives at the Linden Grove Town Hall, August 11, 2001.
Bob is survived by his wife, Marvelle; children Bobbi Knutson (Paul Van Gorp) of Long Prairie, Nancy Knutson (Wayne Wagner) of Boulder, Colo., Joe (JoAnn) Knutson of Cook, Jay (Rachel) Knutson of Apple Valley, Kris Knutson (Randy Mechels) of St. Cloud and Kara Knutson of Buffalo; 10 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his seven siblings, Clarence Knutson, Marguerite Edwards, Helen Bystrom, LuLu Lindgren Lee, Ruby Pohl Geiselman, Gladys (Harold) DuMarce and Jim Knutson; his parents; and his first grandchild.
