Park Rapids - Dorothy Irene “Dod” Rommel, 77, of Park Rapids and formerly of Thief River Falls, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at the home of her daughter, Cathy on Lake Gilmore, northeast of Park Rapids.
Dod, the daughter, of Leonard and Alice (Schultz) Johnson was born on December 15, 1927 in the Twin Cities. Her family later moved to Thief River Falls, where she graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1945.
As a young woman, Dod ventured to South St. Paul where she gained employment as a telephone operator. On December 2, 1950, she was united in marriage to a young plumber, Bernie Rommel who she had met on a blind date some time earlier. The young couple made their home in southeast Minneapolis where they were blessed with seven children, Cathy Jo, Suzan, Wendy, Bill, Mike, Becky and Amy. They continued to live in Minneapolis for a total of 23 years. In 1972, they moved to Park Rapids, where they purchased and operated a plumbing and heating business.
Dorothy enjoyed assisting her husband in the family business by helping with the book work and taking phone calls. They successfully operated the business until retiring in 1989. Since 1990, Dorothy and Bernie enjoyed wintering in Mesa, Ariz. Her life was saddened by the death of Bernie in April of 2004, after 53 years of marriage.
She was a long time member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Park Rapids where she sang in the Alleluia Choir. She was also a member of the Mantrap Valley Conservation Club Ladies Auxiliary. She was looking forward to assisting her daughter, Cathy with the work of the Lake Gilmore Lake Association for this upcoming year. She loved celebrating the Gilly Fest each summer for the past 21 years with her neighbors and friends. Above all, Dod will be remembered for her unconditional acceptance and love and for her positive and original outlook on life.
Dod will be lovingly remembered by her five daughters, Catherine Jo (Allan) Selseth of Park Rapids, Suzan (Dave) Andrus of Centennial, Colo., Wendy (Joe) Reko of Masonville, Colo., Rebecca (Phil) Graff of Severance, Colo. and Amy (Chris) Dorow of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; her two sons, William of St. Paul Park and Michael (Linda) of Eden Prairie; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her sister, Fern (James) Geegan of Superior, Wis.; two brothers, Richard (Deloris) Johnson of Inglewood, Colo., and Robert Johnson of Littleton, Colo; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her infant son, David and her husband, Bernie.
