Thief River Falls - Gladys I. Johnson, 91, died on Saturday, July 30, 2005 at the CNC unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 6, at the New Life Family Worship Center in Thief River Falls, with Pastor Mark Hanson officiating. Casket bearers include Rynell Johnson, Jonathan Brown, Nathan Jorgenson, Ryan Hemmila, Howard Hvidsten, Ehren Hanson and Seth Hanson. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls on Friday, August 5, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Gladys Irene Kisner was born on July 17, 1914, to Otto and Edith (Garrigan) Kisner in Terrrebonne. She attended country school in Wylie Township and the Black River School.
Gladys was united in marriage to Arthur M. Johnson on October 7, 1936, on her father’s farm. The couple made their home in rural Goodridge, where they farmed until 1950. They then moved to Ely and in 1954, moved to Aurora. Gladys was a homemaker, raising a family. They moved to Thief River Falls in 1974. Gladys in her later years, worked out of her home cleaning and for the Green Thumb program. She and Arthur enjoyed wintering in Phoenix, Ariz., for many years, until his death in 1983. Gladys continued to live in her home in Thief River Falls until entering CNC in 2000.
Gladys loved to read. She also did much handiwork, including embroidery and crocheting. She was an active Sunday School teacher for many years and enjoyed her women’s group’s at church. She especially enjoyed her time with her family. She was a former member of the Ely Gospel Tabernacle and the Assembly of God Church in Aurora. She also attended the Karlstad Tabernacle with her children.
Gladys is survived by six children, Carol Poppenhagen of Babbitt, Loren (Cecile) Johnson of Greely, Colo., Richard (Harriet) Johnson of Thief River Falls, Joyce (Wendell) Jorgenson of Newfolden, Sharon (Howard) Hvidsten of Hillsboro, N.D., Audrey ( Mark) Hanson of Thief River Falls; 22 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Estelle Helgenset of Melrose and Arlene Avery of Mountain Home, Ariz., and other relatives and friends.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Arthur in 1983; and three sisters, Grace LaCoursiere, Alice Mosbeck, infant Ruth; daughter-in-law, Barbara Johnson; and son-in-law Glen Poppenhagen.
