Warroad - Thelma Kammen Evenson, 99, formerly of Badger, died Saturday, July 23, 2005 at Warroad Care Center.
A memorial service was held Thursday, July 28 at Zion Lutheran Church in Warroad. Pastor Karen Holmberg-Smith officiated. Honorary casket bearers were those who attended the memorial service. Interment was in Badger City Cemetery.
Thelma Gustava Hegstad was born Dec. 16, 1905 in Badger, the daughter of Thore and Clara (Meldahl) Hegstad. She grew to womanhood in Badger, attending Badger High School through the 10th grade. Thelma was baptized and confirmed at Badger Creek Lutheran Church.
On Dec. 24, 1923, she married Sigurd Kammen in Badger, and from this union, they had three children, Val, Kenneth and Ruth. The couple farmed northwest of Badger until Sig’s death Jan. 20, 1957. She and Ruth, then age 12, moved to Warroad after Sig’s death.
On Jan. 2, 1968, Thelma married Neri Evenson in Warroad and then started spending the winter months in Texas. San Juan, Texas, soon became their year-round home. Neri died at their home in Texas on Nov. 14, 1989.
In 1995, Thelma moved back to the Warroad area and became a resident of Lakeview Apartments. For the past two months, she resided at the Warroad Care Center.
She is survived by one daughter, Ruth (Donnelly) Knepper of Clackamas, Ore.; one son, Kenneth (Susan) Kammen of Willmar; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Thelma was preceded in death by both of her husbands; her parents; her daughter Val Krone; grandson Glen Krone; and all of her siblings, including three brothers, Rudy, Julian and Conrad, and two sisters, Myrtle Nyquist and Lenora Ekeberg. A00003B2005AG03
