Thief River Falls - Dorothy (Pederson) Swanson, 78, Thief River Falls, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at her home in Thief River Falls.
The funeral service to celebrate the life of Dorothy Swanson was held Monday, May 12 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Thief River Falls, with Rev. Bert Foster officiating. Casket bearers included Dorothy’s grandchildren. Interment was held at the Bethlehem Cemetery in New Solum Township, Marshall County.
Dorothy Ann Swan was born on August 19, 1935 at home on the family farm west of Newfolden, the daughter of Arthur and Annabelle (Windahl) Swan. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. Dorothy attended country school and graduated from Marshall County Central High School in Newfolden, in 1954.
On July 31, 1954, Dorothy was united in marriage to Gerald M. Pederson in Newfolden. The couple farmed the Pederson family farm near Newfolden, before moving to the Iron Range in 1955. To this union, five children were born, Arlette, Steven, Jeffrey, DeEtta and Kristi. Dorothy loved being a homemaker and being home to raise their children. They moved back to the Thief River Falls area in 1967.
In the mid-1970s, Dorothy started working as a nurse’s aide at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls. They also farmed the Pederson Family Farm near Viking, which became a Century Farm in 2014. Gerald passed away suddenly on Dec. 23, 1994.
On April 27, 2002, Dorothy was united in marriage to Lenord Swanson at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Thief River Falls. They made their home on the Swanson Family Farm and Dorothy welcomed her new extended family, Kathi, Jani and Hal.
Dorothy was always an active member of a church including most recently the Evangelical Covenant Church in Thief River Falls. She served on a number of the church boards, and was active in Women’s Bible Study and the Women’s Ministry group. She was also very passionately pro-life and served as President of the local chapter of Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life. Dorothy was active in Christian Women, The Homemakers Club and was a Senior Companion for several years.
She loved dancing, playing piano, singing, traveling, playing BINGO on the computer, working jigsaw puzzles, and she especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors include her husband, Lenord Swanson of Thief River Falls; children, Arlette (Jerry) Wenzloff of Thief River Falls, Steven (Kathy) Pederson of Duluth, and Jeffrey (Jeanne) Pederson of Thief River Falls, DeEtta Holder of Andover and Kristi Kaushagen (John Goraczkowski) of Orr; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; Lenord’s children, Kathi (Rick) Arbues of Laguna Hills, Calif., Jani (Michael) Wiebolt of Motley, and Hal (Tamie) Swanson of Baxter; six grandchildren; siblings, Vernon (Betty) Swan, Joyce Knutson, Robert Swan, Sonya (Gaylord) Pederson, and James (Mary Ann) Swan; sister-in-law, Delphine Swan; brother-in-law, William Grindeland; and many other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gerald; parents; brother, Wendell Swan; sisters, Lois (Herald) Maki and Ardith Jean Grindeland; brother-in-law, Sidney Knutson; sister-in-law, Beverly Swan.
