Crookston - Vivian Brekke, 90, died Friday, May 2, 2014 in Crookston.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, with Rev. John Voelker officiating. Interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery, rural Thief River Falls    .
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service on Friday, May 9 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the services at the church.
Vivian Elaine Brekke was born September 22, 1923 in Thief River Falls, the daughter of Selmer Olson and Othelia (Hanson) Olson. She was baptized and confirmed at rural Oakridge Lutheran Church. She attended School  District 180 through eighth grade and graduated from St. Hilaire High School in 1942. After high school she was employed by Northwest Airlines in St. Paul before enlisting in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) basic training at Hunter College in the Bronx in New York. Her further assignment was to the Naval Communication Department in Washington, D.C. where she served for two years and was then honorably discharged in March of 1946.
On June 7, 1947, Vivian was united in marriage to Leonard A. Brekke at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. They continued to make their home in Thief River Falls. They were blessed with two sons, Greg and Mark. After their graduation, Vivian entered the world of work. She took many vocational courses at AVTI, was self-educated, highly organized and well read. Vivian was employed by the Northwest Vocational Center/District 564, retiring in 1991.
Vivian has been a dedicated supporter and coordinator of the American Cancer Society for thirty years. While she has been cancer free for 36 years she has to be commended for her continued fight against cancer. She has served on the Pennington County Cancer Board for many years. She also volunteered for the I Can Cope Program, Cancer Door Crusade, Daffodil Days and the Cancer booth at the fair in 1990 and 1991. She was also awarded the Minnesota Quality of Life Award for Rehabilitation by the American Cancer Society for her many years devoted to cancer patients.
In 2000, she was awarded the Outstanding Senior Citizen for Pennington County.
Vivian was an active member at Trinity Lutheran Church and served on various committees. She enjoyed the Quilting group. She also enjoyed working on Norwegian Hardanger needlework, counted cross-stitch and sewing in her spare time.
She was a member of the American Legion, a life time member of the Sons of Norway, and Women in the Military C.M.U. in St. Cloud.
Vivian celebrated her 90th Birthday in September  2013.
Vivian is survived by her son Greg and his wife Susan of Thief River Falls; two granddaughters, Jessica (Casey) Clement of Bismarck, N.D., and Stephanie (Nate) Triplett of Brooklyn Park; two great-grandchildren, Kade and Taylor Clement; one sister, Joyce Halbasch of Thief River Falls; sisters-in-law, Delores Donarski, Ruth Perreault, Gail Brekke, and Lila Brekke; several nieces and nephews.
Leonard died January, 2008 and their son Mark died in 1994. Her parents, brother Clifford and sisters Helen and Alice also preceded her in death.
