Thief River Falls - Iver Gunder Torfin, 90, Thief River Falls, died on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at his home with his children and loved ones at his side.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Iver Gunder Torfin was born on Feb. 17, 1924 in Wannaska, the son of Irving Benjamin and Peggy Esther (Sorter) Torfin. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith in Wannaska, and confirmed in Roseau. Iver attended school in Roseau, and graduated in 1942. 
In 1943, Iver entered into service with the United States Army Air Corps. He was a radio operator on a C-47 aircraft. He served in the European Theater, earned a good conduct medal and was Honorably Discharged in 1946. 
On Nov. 4, 1946, Iver was united in marriage to Margaret Svir in East Grand Forks. They lived for a short time in St. Paul, where Iver was going to radio school to further his education. The couple then moved to Thief River Falls where they raised their six children.  Margaret died on July 27, 1989.
Iver worked at Sjoberg’s Cable Television for 62 years.
In March 1991, Iver joined the Catholic faith and on Oct. 23, 1991 he was united in marriage to Beverly “Betty” Fitzgerald at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls. They continued to reside in Thief River Falls.  Betty died on Dec. 28, 1997. 
Iver was an amateur radio operator; he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gunsmithing and target shooting.
He was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls.
Survivors include his loving children, Karen (Wayne) Bjerken of Thief River Falls, Jean (Keith) Stoinski of Princeton, Douglas (Jan) Torfin of Colorado Springs, Colo., Gregory (Jenny) Torfin of Harrogate, England, Rebecca Torfin of St. Paul, and Jill (Troy) Harris of Brainerd; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; loving partner Virginia “Ginny” Tripp; sister, Lois Eisenrich of Grafton, N.D.; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; parents; sisters, Dorothy (Wally) Gunnarson and Peggy (Yvonne) Magnusson; brother-in-law, Bob Eisenrich.
