Thief River Falls - Lawrence “Larry” Bottem of Thief River Falls, 86, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, N.D.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, with Father Rick Lambert officiating. Interment will follow at St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls. Visitation will also take place one hour prior to the funeral service on Thursday.
Lawrence “Larry” Orin Bottem was born on Dec. 2, 1927 in Holt, the son of Oscar and Olga (Halvorson) Bottem. He attended the Holt school.
Larry proudly served his country in the Korean War for the United States Army from June 13, 1951 until his honorable discharge on June 3, 1953. He received the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.
On May 15, 1954, Lawrence was united in marriage to Darlene Joan Drees at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Thief River Falls. The couple made their home in Thief River Falls and to this union, five children were born: Jeffrey, Laurie, Kathy, Gregory and Timothy.
Larry worked for many years at Bridgeman Creamery in Thief River Falls, retiring in 1990.
Larry enjoyed gardening, going to the Casino, playing cards, spending time with family, hunting, fishing, and being outdoors.
Survivors include children: Jeff (Lynda) Bottem, of Plano, Texas, Laurie (Chuck) Kelly, Billings, Mont., Kathy Johnson, Greg (Robin) Bottem and Timothy (Lisa) Bottem, all of Thief River Falls; grandchildren: Kamber (Kevin Brodock) Kelly, Kandice (Ty) Gregorak, Kyle (Kim) Bottem, Kelsey (Brent) Holmgren, Chelsey (Kyle) Vettleson, Bryana Davidson, Cody Bottem, Troy (Caitlin Koch) Bottem, Brendan and Colin Bottem; great-grandchildren: Kathryn Bottem, Kayda Parker, Olivia Vettleson, Gabrielle Gregorak, baby Holmgren, baby Vettleson, and baby Brodock on the way.
He was preceded in death by his wife Darlene on Sept. 1, 2012; parents: Oscar and Olga; brothers and sisters: Ernest, Leonard, Clarence, Rueben, Melvin, Morris, Ruth Sorum, Alice Scheib, Florence Homme, and Gladys Offerdahl.
