Newfolden - Thelma Dahl, 96, Newfolden, died on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, with her loving family at her side.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6 at Evangelical Free Church, Newfolden, with Rev. Gary Barrett and Rev. Arthur Wood officiating. Interment will be in Rindal Cemetery, New Solum Township, Marshall County.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, and at the church for one hour prior to service.
Thelma Svanajord was born April 6, 1917 in Highlanding Township, Pennington County, near Erie, to Aslak and Anne (Haugestoyl) Svanajord. She attended school in Highlanding Township and in Saskatchewan, Canada. Thelma lived with her family for five years in Saskatchewan and returned to Minnesota in the late 1930s.
In 1939, she went to work in Seattle, Wash. On May 31, 1940 she was united in marriage to Engvald Dahl in Seattle. The couple then returned to the Dahl family farm in New Solum Township, Marshall County, which had been in the family since 1884. The couple farmed until 1993 and resided there until selling the farm in 1996 to their son. Thelma then moved into Thief River Falls.
Thelma loved her home and family. In later years, the couple traveled a lot. When the kids left home, she went to work at Land-O-Lakes and Arctic Cat. She attended Evangelical Free Church, Newfolden and was involved in the Ladies Aid, White Cross, and Rosewood Homemakers.
Survivors include sons, Bob (Carol) Dahl, Newfolden, Wayne (Nancy) Dahl, Mentor, James (Bonnie) Dahl, Bemidji; daughter, Sandi (Bert) Gjovik, Park Rapids/Grand Forks, N.D.; grandchildren, Jeff (Donna) Dahl, Brenda (Mike) Adamek, Randy (Robin) Dahl, Kelly (Alice) Dahl, Heidi (Chip) Tranby, Angie (Jim) Morken, Gina (Todd) Gazelka, Londa (Craig) Moen, Sheri (Cory) Geiszler and Bobbi Jo (Tim) Simmons; great-grandchildren, David, Jonathan, Jessica, Katya, Ellert, Anthony, Alycia (Tad), Allyson, Dillon, Dustin, Cole, Keylee, Jacob, Hope, Justin, Zachary, Emily, Maxwell, Grace, James, Pamela, Megan, Kelsea, Rylee, Easton, Addyson, Amy, Aiden; great-great-grandchild, Jacory; sister, Gladys Heinze, Thief River Falls; sister-in-law, Dorothy Svanajord; special friend, Rose Sollid; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oct. 31, 1997; parents; brother, Bennie; sister, Gena Gunderson; half-sister, Anna Wagner; brothers-in-law, George Gunderson, Frank Heinze and Adolph Wagner.
