Thief River Falls - Geri Sollom, 70, passed away on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, with Reverend John Golv officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Geraldine (Geri) Gaylene Sampson was born on September 3, 1943, in Thief River Falls, to Harry and Soledad (Tillie) Sampson. She attended school at the Sunnyside one-room schoolhouse near her rural home and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1961. Years later she returned to school and received an AA degree from Northland Community College in 1981.
In 1963, Geri married Don Howe, and together they had two children, Lisa and Michael. The couple made their home in Algona, Iowa; Brainerd and eventually returned to Thief River Falls.
In 1987, Geri was united in marriage to Don Sollom, where Geri became a mother to his children, Meg and Lydya. Throughout the years, Geri worked for the railroad, Northwestern Bell, and eventually Northland Community College, where she was able to help other adults return to and graduate from college.
Geri enjoyed gardening, bird watching, reading, spending time at the lake and all animals. Most of all, she loved spending every minute she could with her two granddaughters, Abigail and Kaiya. She didn’t miss an event they were in and was extremely proud of every little thing they did.
Geri was an integral part in the formation of the Thief River Falls Skating Club and was always willing to help in any way possible. Other organizations that were important to her included the Thief River Falls Volunteer Fire Department and the Pennington County Humane Society. Geri also believed that education was extremely important and was very proud of her children and grandchildren’s commitment to education.
She is survived by her husband, Don Sollom; children, Lisa (Marty) Semanko of Thief River Falls, Michael (Theresa) Howe of Ottertail,  Meg (Chris) Hastings of Eagan, and Lydya Sollom, currently stationed in Norfolk, Va., with the U.S. Navy; grandchildren Abigail Semanko and Kaiya Howe; sisters, Harriet Philipp of Thief River Falls, Arlene (Dave) Mueller of Mound,  and Holly (Jim) Drouillard of Trail; sisters-in-law Tobey Myers of Thief River Falls and Kathy (Daryl) Myers of Richland, Wash.; and brother-in-law Bob (Cathy) Sollom of Stafford, Va.; along with many nieces and nephews, all of whom were very special to her.
Geri was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws Phyllis and Al Sollom and Harold and Beatrice Howe, sister Darlene DuChamp, an infant sister, sister-in-law Carrie Sollom, and brother-in-law Harry Philipp.
Memorials are suggested to Thief River Falls Education Foundation or Pennington County Humane Society.
