Red Lake Falls - Shirley Swenson, 75, of Red Lake Falls, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 in the evening, surrounded by her loving family at Sanford Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, Oct. 11 at St Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, with Father Chuck Huck officiating. Interment was held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery near Red Lake Falls.
Shirley (Knott) Swenson was born Aug. 12, 1938, daughter of Harvey and Lillie (Gale) Knott in Red Lake Falls. She attended country school for 8 years then Lafayette High School in Red Lake Falls graduating in 1957. She attended St. Francis Hospital School of Practical Nursing at Crookston graduating Sept. of 1958. She was employed for four years at St. Francis Hospital.
On June 25, 1960 Shirley was united in marriage to Darrel Swenson at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls. In 1962, they moved to Red Lake Falls, where she worked at St. Johns Hospital until 1976, when she worked at the Red Lake Falls Clinic. She was employed for 22 years at Dakota Clinic in Thief River Falls, retiring June 30, 2005, She was employed in nursing for 47 years, she enjoyed taking care of all ages of people she especially loved the babies.
Shirley has been active in her church, she was on the parish council for 16 years, on the pastoral planning committee, was past president of parish guild, and Eucharistic minister. She was also on the committee to form our local ambulance, she served as president for 2 years and secretary for 4 years, as well as an ambulance attendant for 10 years. She also played bag lady for men’s occasions around the area. She was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts for 4 years.
Shirley loved the Holidays especially Christmas, their home was decorated inside and out, with a lot of love. She liked to cook the Holiday meals and watch the grandchildren open their gifts, there usually was a trick played on one of the grandchildren.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 53 years, Darrel of Red Lake Falls; children Brian Swenson of West Fargo, N.D., Bradley (Dawn) Swenson of Red Lake Falls, Sheryl (Erik) Beitel of Thief River Falls, and Stacey (Butch) Papenfuss of Robbinsdale; grandchildren: Ross, Logan and Preston Swenson, Shelby and Kristina Swenson, Regan and Cody Hawk, Ashley, Lynzy and Sydnee Beitel, Alexis, John and Trace Papenfuss; great-grandchildren: Ayden, Lilly, Skylar, Haedynn, Carter, Ashton, and Bradley; Brother Orville (Gen) Knott of Red Lake Falls; Sister Eva Lundquist of East Grand Forks; sister-in-law Loretta Knott of Red Lake Falls.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Don Knott, Laverne Knott and Gordon Knott; sister Gladys Haupt; sisters-in-law Marie Knott and Clarice Knott; brothers-in-law Tom Lundquist and John Haupt.
