Henry Bruno Bukowski was born at home in Cedar Township, Middle River, on Aug. 29, 1931, the son of Bruno and Clara (Statkiewicz) Bukowski. He was baptized, received First Communion and was confirmed at the Jane Mission Church of Thief River Falls which was located near Middle River. Two miles west of his home Henry attended rural school at the Keopp School until eighth grade, but most of his education came from working all his life on the family farm.
On Dec. 1, 1955 Henry enlisted with the United States Army. He was stationed in Alaska as an Automotive Maintenance Helper, but as Henry would say, “Mechanic.” He received the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged on September 3, 1957.
While Henry was on leave in the winter of 1956, he met the love of his life, Jeanette Kosmatka at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Middle River. Following his military service, Henry came back to the family farm and married his sweetheart, Jeanette on April 7, 1959.
Henry and Jeanette made their home on the farm where they raised small grains, cattle, sheep, chickens, dairy cattle, and their boys, Russell and Nathan. He was proud to spend his life on the farm taking care of God’s creatures and land just as his grandparents and parents had before him, and his son continues today.
Alongside his farm he was dedicated to his family and his faith. He served as the Sacristan and filled in wherever he was needed at St. Joseph’s Church. Henry loved to spend time with Jeanette watching their boys and grandkids play sports. He enjoyed playing cards, bingo, working in the wood shop, and gardening. Henry was like a little kid in a candy store in the fall during harvest time when he was able to see the fruits of his labor…the combine was his favorite.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette of Middle River; children, Russell (Sharon) Bukowski of Elmira, N.Y., Nathan (Mindy) Bukowski of Middle River; grandchildren, Dennis (Morgan) Bukowski of Fargo, N.D., Rachel (Fiance Tyler Larson) Bukowski of Bemidji; great-grandchild, Kate Bukowski; sister, Eleanore Rantanen; brother-in-law, James (Lennae) Kosmatka; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, relatives and friends
Henry was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Irene Bukowski and Christine Black; brother, Joseph and infant brother, Aloysie.
