Alexandria - Roy Ilmari Jarvi, 80, formerly of Thief River Falls, died on Saturday, May 21, 2005 in Alexandria.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 4, at United Methodist Church in Alexandria, beginning at 3 p.m. Interment will be held at Palmer cemetery off the North Shore Highway, near Two Harbors at a later date.
Roy Jarvi was born July 13, 1924, in Two Harbors, the son of Finnish immigrants, Gust and Sophie Jarvi. He grew up in the Two Harbors area of Clover Valley and graduated from Clover Valley high school.
After graduation, during World War II, he began working as a welder in the shipyard in Duluth and in Sausalito, Calif. On August 23, 1945, he was united in marriage to Clarice Lingren in Two Harbors. The couple made their home in the Two Harbors-Duluth area where Roy worked for the city of Two Harbors and at Goldfine's Trading Post in Duluth.
He then worked as a territory manager for Oliver Corporation, and the couple moved to Thief River Falls in 1956. In 1963, he was transferred to Alexandria with Oliver Corporation, where he was employed until his retirement.
He was very active in the DFL political party and was a field representative for Congressman Bob Bergland. He also was a founder of Viking Savings Association in Alexandria and served on the Board of Directors. Roy was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Elks. He was very proud of his Finnish heritage and made several trips to visit relatives in Finland. He enjoyed hunting and golfing with his friends. He was very proud of his four grandchildren and attended many of their activities.
Roy Jarvi is survived by two sons, David and Steven, both of Alexandria; and a daughter, Susan (Barry) Froiland of Thief River Falls, as well as four grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Anderson of Proctor, a brother-in law, Ray (Joan) Lingren of Cloquet, and several relatives in Finland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Clarice, in 1999, and a brother-in-law, David Anderson. A00003B2005JN01
