Gatzke - Esther Olivia Dahl, 97, died on Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls.
Funeral services were held on Friday, May 27 at United Lutheran Church in Gatzke, with Pastor Jim Field officiating. Casket bearers included grandchildren: Dean Hesse, Dan Hesse, Brenda Knutson, Debbie Aune, Hiedi Dahl, Karen Windecker and Connie Savageau. Interment was held at Randeen Cemetery in Gatzke.
Esther Olivia Dahl, the daughter of the late Nels and Mary (Askaroth) Johnson, was born on April 19, 1908, in Rollis Township of Marshall County, near Gatzke. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and attended eight years at the former Rollis School near her home, and one year at Middle River High School.
On November 4, 1933, Esther was united in marriage to John E. Dahl in Warren. The couple farmed in Whiteford Township, near Gatzke. John died July 5, 1972, and Esther continued her home on the farm until October of 1992, when she moved to the Royal Manor Apartments in Middle River.
She was a life-long member of the United Lutheran Church of Gatzke and of the Ladies Aid. She also was a member of the Gatzke Senior Citizens. Esther loved being with family and friends, and loved to travel and see new places. She enjoyed music, gardening, playing scrabble and card games, and had a great sense of humor.
On May 23, 2003, Esther moved to the Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls.
She is survived by a daughter: Peggy (Melvin) Hesse, of Plummer; two sons, Raymond and Clarence (Diane), both of Middle River; seven grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Esther was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one granddaughter; brothers, Ernest, Harry, Oscar, Alfred, Dewey, and Oscar; and sisters, Ida Ringold, Nellie Ohman Anna Johnson, Jenny Bracco, Marcella Haapala, and Alice Ruud.
