Allen “Al” Douglas Sorum was born Oct. 18, 1967 in Grand Forks, N.D., the son of Arlen Arthur Sorum and Cherilyn Adell (Fong) Sorum. He was baptized into the Presbyterian Faith at Menden Hall Presbyterian Church in East Grand Forks, and was confirmed as a young adult at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls.
Al attended school in East Grand Forks, before his family moved to Thief River Falls. He attended school at Northrop Elementary, Mark Twain, and Lincoln High School, graduating with the Prowler class of 1986. While in high school Al excelled at football, baseball, hockey, choir, and liked to participate in musicals. During his youth, Al was always busy, whether it was delivering the Radiogram in Thief River Falls, the papers on his paper route, working at Pizza Hut, or playing summer baseball.
Following high school, Al attended Northland Community College in Thief River Falls where he was actively involved in baseball, hockey, theatre, and choir. He worked for Homark in Red Lake Falls, and Domino’s Pizza and Arctic Cat in Thief River Falls.
Al moved to Las Vegas, Nev., shortly after college. He worked for Sam’s Club and continued his studies in rock ’n roll history and psychology at a community college there.
In 2004, Al relocated to Fargo, N.D., and worked for Menard’s. On May 24, 2012 Al was diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. In 2012 Al proudly participated in the Walk to Defeat ALS in Fargo. He then moved home to Thief River Falls to be close to his family.
When asked about his favorite pastimes, Al, without hesitation exclaimed, “Sports, sports, sports!” During his childhood he and his friends played baseball by Greenwood cemetery, swam near the dam, and enjoyed war games together. As an adult Al liked playing fantasy football as well as golfing, riding bike, watching football, baseball, hockey, and bowling-belonging to the U.S Bowling Society.
He also enjoyed shooting darts, selling on Ebay, watching movies and sports on TV, fishing, working on electronics, and fixing cars.
Spending time with his family and the children in his life were especially important to Al, especially his niece, Erin and his Goddaughter, Jenness Barron.
Living with ALS, Al knew firsthand what wonderful programs and services the ALS Association provides to patients and their families.
