Thief River Falls - Elayne Sandahl, 87, Thief River Falls, died on Monday, July 1, 2013 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Casket bearers included Bruce Sandahl, Neal Sandahl, Steve Sandahl, Jerry Sandahl, Nancy Sandahl and Carter Green. Honorary casket bearers included Elayne’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 5 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, with Rev. John Golv officiating. Interment was held at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.
Elayne Maxine Green was born on March 11, 1926 in Newfolden, the daughter of Olger and Agnes (Westman) Green. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on March 14, 1926 in Newfolden, and confirmed on Oct. 20, 1940 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden.  Elayne graduated from Newfolden High School in 1944 and Moorhead Teachers College in Moorhead in 1946.  In the fall of 1946, Elayne began her teaching career in a one room school in Lake Bronson.
On Aug. 16, 1947, Elayne was united in marriage to Allan Sandahl and the couple made their home in the Lake Bronson area. To this union, five children were born, Bruce, Neal, Steve, Jerry and Nancy. In 1959, the family moved to Thief River Falls and Elayne taught at Knox Elementary School. While continuing to teach and raise her family, Elayne attended Bemidji State College, and graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. After teaching for forty two years, Elayne retired in 1989.
Elayne loved spending time with her family and fishing at their summer cottage at Lake Bronson.  She enjoyed traveling with her family, reading, bird watching, nature, daily newspaper puzzles, crossword puzzles, needlework, Sudoku, and was a sports fanatic never missing a Viking or Twins game. Her favorite was watching her kids play sports and later her grandchildren in their sports.  Elayne was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, and was active in the Rebekah Circle, Sharing Servants and quilting.   
Survivors include children, Bruce (Diane) Sandahl of Lancaster, Neal (Lana) Sandahl of Thief River Falls, Steven (Cindy) Sandahl of Warroad, Jerry (Shawn) Sandahl of Thief River Falls and Nancy (Guy Finstrom) Sandahl of Thief River Falls; grandchildren, Sonja (Kevin), Rich (Connie), Mike (Carlee), Alex, Erica, Jared, Carli, Ryan (Danielle), Kelly (Becky), Angie (Jake); 18 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Marge Green, Delia (Don) Nelson, Arlean (William) Kropelnickie; her cat, Chloe; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan on October 27, 1999; grandson, Carl on July 1, 2013; brother, Orin Green on March 22, 2005; parents; sisters-in-law, Doris Williams and Grace Kohout; brother-in-law, Gordon (Audrey) Sandahl.
