Merrifield - Richard Lorenson, 67, of Merrifield, formerly of Plummer and Strathcona, died unexpectedly on Friday, June 21, 2013 at his home.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 28 at Grace Evangelical Church of Strathcona, with Pastor Sheldon Lorenson officiating. Casket bearers included Duane, Doug and Derek Lorenson, Arlen Vacura, Doug Bentow and Ivan Johnson. Honorary casket bearers were Rick’s five grandchildren, Adrianna, Brandon, Max, Zac and Preston Lorenson, as well as his family and friends.
Interment was held at the Lorenson Family Cemetery, rural Strathcona.
Richard Darrell Lorenson, the son of Clifford and Dorothy (Bentow) Lorenson, was born March 30, 1946 in Thief River Falls. He grew up in Strathcona and graduated from Greenbush High School in 1964.
He married Lorraine Melby on Oct. 17, 1964 at Oiland Lutheran Church, rural Greenbush. He received his Bachelor of Education degree from the University of North Dakota in 1969. He taught school at Apollo High School in St. Cloud, from 1969 to 1973. He farmed from 1973 until the late 1980s.
Rick received his Master of School Administration degree from St. Cloud State University in 1985. He served as principal of Strandquist High School from 1977 to 1987 and superintendent/principal of Red Lake County Central Public Schools in Plummer, from 1987 to 2003.
They enjoyed their Merrifield Lake home for the past five years and have spent the last nine winters at Apache Junction, Arizona.
Rick was a member of Grace Evangelical Church, the Greenbush-Badger Lions Club, Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals, Minnesota Association of School Administrators, Merrifield Marathoners Snowmobile Club and the Old Geezer’s Club of Merrifield.
Rick enjoyed farming, fishing, manicuring his lawns, playing cards, visiting with family and friends, watching sports, doing crossword puzzles and Sudoku.
He is survived by his Wife, Lorraine; four sons, Jeffrey of Williston, N.D., Brad (Benita) of Warren, Scott (Rebecca) of Belmont, Calif., and Mark (Katie) of Eden Prairie; five grandchildren, Adrianna, Brandon, Max, Zac and Preston Lorenson; three brothers, Ronald (Bonnie) of Karlstad, Sheldon (Claudette) of Osceola, Iowa and Larry (Nancy) of Nisswa; brother-in-law, Lee (Kerri) Melby of Roseau; several uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Dorothy Lorenson; his parents-in-law, Edward and Olga Melby; nephew, Timothy Lorenson; uncles, aunts and other relatives.
Funeral arrangements were with Gieseke Funeral Chapel of Greenbush.
