Karlstad - Roy L. Holm, 93, of Karlstad, formerly of Thief River Falls, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2013 at Karlstad Healthcare Center in Karlstad.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 28 at Zion Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls, with Rev. John Golv officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the memorial service at the church. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.
Roy Lawrence Holm was born Oct. 30, 1919 in Halma, the seventh of eight children to John Edwin and Kristine Julie (Lyngstad) Holm. He was baptized and confirmed at Eidsvold Lutheran Church, Halma. After attending grade school in Halma, he graduated in 1938 from Karlstad High School, Karlstad. He then moved to Thief River Falls and was employed as a driver for Gamble Robinson until he entered the United States Army in 1942.
Roy received training as a Medical Technician at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., and served with the 9th General Hospital in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. He earned his honorable discharge in 1946.
On Oct. 21, 1950, Roy was united in marriage to Beverly Stenberg at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, where they continued to make their home and raise three children. He spent a 32-year career as a driver/salesman for Land O’ Lakes milk and ice cream division. The National Safety Council commended Roy for 32 years of accident-free driving when he retired in 1979. During retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, visiting over a cup of coffee and traveling with Bev, his wife and sweetheart of 62 years to visit family and friends. His grandchildren will remember his story telling and singing big band tunes.
Roy is survived by his loving wife Beverly; three children: David (Cathy) Holm of Oconomowoc, Wis., Barbara (Brad) St. George of Thief River Falls, Stephen (Barbara) Holm of Middle River; seven grandchildren: Courtney (Mike) Steinhafel of Madison, Wis., Christine Holm of Tempe, Ariz., Lexie (Kevin) Bakken of Thief River Falls, Aaron St. George of Thief River Falls, Larissa (Brett) Willett of Shakopee, Breanna (TJ) Super of Perham, Jordan Holm of Middle River; two great-grandchildren: Brock Steinhafel and Gabriel Willett; one sister: Avys Scott, Costa Mesa, Calif., along with several nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents and sisters: Mae Oberg, Alyce Esch, brothers: Robert, Joe, Olav and Clifford.
