Thief River Falls - Gordon Markstrom of Thief River Falls peacefully went to be with the Lord at the age of 93 on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Sanford Medical Center in Thief River Falls, surrounded by family and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial and a celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m., with a visitation from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, June 7 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, with Father Rick Lambert officiating.
Gordon Aronold Markstom was born on Feb. 6, 1920 in Fox, to Peter Leander and Bertha (Olson) Markstrom. He was baptized as an infant in Roseau, and confirmed in Warroad by Father Shanahan. He attended school in Roseau. While growing up, Gordon worked for his father in his restaurant/tavern/pool halls located in Roseau, Williams and Badger.
On Oct. 26, 1942, Gordon married Patricia Ella Ganyo in Roseau. In November 1942, they set out on his tour of duty as a Drill Sergeant with the United States Army, traveling the United States. In 1946, they returned to Roseau, where Gordon went to work for the Minnesota Department of Transportation. In 1965, Pat and Gordon moved to Thief River Falls, where they have lived in their family home throughout most of their 71 years of marriage.
Gordon was active in many organizations including the American Legion, Golden K, Kiwanis Club, Knights of Columbus and he was a member of St. Bernard's Church in Thief River Falls. Gordon had a love for woodworking and was a talented craftsman. He customized every square inch of his home and made over 100 "Grandpa Gordon Cradles" even taking home a Blue Ribbon from the county fair.
Left to cherish his memories and remember his stories are, his children: Kimberly Anne (John) Desotell, Bird Island, Onna Lynn "Honey" Hare, Grand Rapids, and Gordon Vern (Becky) Markstrom, Eagan; grandchildren: Bryonne (Peter) Stacklie, Shaejhon Desotell, Tony Markstrom and Alyssa Markstrom, and a great-grandson Kanton Stacklie. sisters: Bernie Stanton, Seattle, Wash., and Lola Wakuruk, Coon Rapids; sisters-in-law: Gladys Markstrom, Warroad; Gladie Markstrom, Roseau, and Vivian Markstrom, Thief River Falls.
Gordon was welcomed by his parents, sisters: Gladys Darst, Irene Meyer, Ruby Klimaszewski and Lillian Morken; brothers: LaVoy "Kian" Markstrom, Leonard Markstrom, Marvin Markstrom and an infant brother; special friends and brothers-in-law, Vern Ganyo and Bob Ganyo.
We're left with a few treasured possessions and the lasting sense that we are loved. Gordon was a giving man and cared deeply for his family and friends. The family is forever grateful for how you have touched Gordon's life, each in your own special way.
