Chippewa Falls, Wis. - Gladys Hovland, 97, of Chippewa Falls, Wis., formerly of Fergus Falls, died Friday, May 10, 2013 at the Rutledge Home in Chippewa Falls, Wis.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 23, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will follow in the Bethlehem Cemetery.
Gladys Magdalene Johnshoy was born in Fergus Falls, on April 29, 1916 to Dr. Joseph Walter Johnshoy and Helga (Larsen) Johnshoy.  She was the oldest of nine children and lived with her family in Fargo, N.D., and Moorhead, where her father taught philosophy and classical languages at Concordia College.  Gladys graduated from Moorhead High School in 1934 and from Concordia College in 1938.  
After graduating from college, she taught High School English in Henning, and also spent time working for the stock exchange in Minneapolis.
On Oct. 17, 1942, Gladys married Julius “Julie” Martin Hovland. After Julie completed his seminary studies in 1943, they moved to Absarokee, Mont., where Julie became pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church and Gladys served as organist. Throughout Julie’s ministry, Gladys served alongside him in parishes at Sunburst, Mont., Washburn, Wis., Wausau, Wis., Thief River Falls, and Fergus Falls. While in Sunburst, Gladys started the Sunburst library, the Girl Scouts, and a children’s choir at her church.
After Julie’s death in 1982, Gladys purchased a home in Fergus Falls, where she lived independently until she was 94. She then moved to Eau Claire, Wis., and eventually to Chippewa Falls, Wis.  Family was very important to Gladys throughout her life.
Gladys was preceded in death by her father and mother; brothers, Rev. Edward Johnshoy, Dr. Howard Johnshoy, Rev. Arthur Johnshoy, Dr. Norman Johnshoy; and sisters, Lois Grindland and Dorothy Klyve.
She is survived by her brother Rev. Ralph (LaVonne) Johnshoy and sister Ruth (Harold) Aasland; sisters-in-law Naomi Johnshoy, Velma Johnshoy, and Lois Johnshoy; son David (Wilma) Hovland of Eau Claire, and daughter JoAn (Jerry) Sanders of Stow, OH; grandchildren Lance (Racheal) Hovland, Sara Hovland, Julie (Brad) Silverstein, and Cody Sanders; great grandchildren Anika and Henry Hovland, Hudson and Nolan Silverstein.  In addition, she is survived by many nieces and nephews.
The family requests memorials to the “Rev. Julius M. and Gladys M. Hovland Award Fund” c/o Concordia College, Moorhead.
