Grand Forks, N.D. - Ruth “Dolly” Johnke, 89, of Grand Forks, N.D., died Friday, May 20, 2005, at Valley Eldercare Center in Grand Forks, N.D.
Ruth Knutson was born April 5, 1916 in rural Emerado, N.D., the daughter of Julius and Clara (Langlie) Knutson. She was raised and educated in Emerado. As a young women, she moved to Portland, Ore., and during World War II she worked in the Portland shipyards. She returned to Grand Forks, N.D. and married Stanley Gunderson. Following their marriage, they moved to rural Fisher. Stanley preceded her in death in 1946. Ruth moved to Grand Forks, N.D. and in 1953 she married William H. Johnke, Jr. William preceded her in death on August 2, 2002. She continued to reside in Grand Forks until her death.
Ruth volunteered many hours of service at the Grand Forks Mission. She enjoyed gardening and loved sewing.
She is survived by her daughters, Jacquelyn (Herb) Maurstad of Warren and Marlys (Wayne) Gschwend of Emmitt, Idaho; her sons, Ronald (Dianne) Johnke and Steven (Katherine) Johnke, both of Grand Forks, N.D., Roger Gunderson of Minneapolis, Robert (Peggy) Gunderson of Fisher; 20 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Stanley and William; a sister, Lillian Knutson; brothers, Raymond Knutson and Allen Knutson and a granddaughter; Sara Marie Maurstad.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24 at Gregory J. Norman – Norman Funeral Home, S. Washington St., Grand Forks, N.D.
Interment was held at Sunnywood Gardens Cemetery, Grand Forks, N.D. paid obituary
