West St. Paul - Burnard Edwin Sturre, 83, formerly of Goodridge, died in the late evening hours of March 9, 2013 at Southview Acres Nursing Home in West St. Paul after a long battle with prostate cancer.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2013 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church and Friday, March 15 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
Burnard Edwin Sturre was born on February 25, 1930 in Wheaton, the son of Herman and Doris (Phelps) Sturre. Burnard was baptized and confirmed at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls. Burnard attended grade school in Goodridge. For a short period of time, the Sturre family relocated to Oregon to work in the shipyards there but returned to Goodridge to live.
Burnard served in the U.S. Army from January 5, 1951 until Jan. 4, 1954. He was in Company A, 710th Tank Battalion in Fort Campbell, Kent. While in the Army, he attended Airborne training where he received his parachute badge. Burnard also received the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
On Feb. 14, 1956 Burnard married Kathleen Edna Geving. They first lived in San Diego, Calif., then moved to the Seattle, Wash., area, and then moved back to the Goodridge area where they would farm for nine years.
In 1971, they moved to Staples, where they lived for almost 20 years and then moved to St. Paul.
Burnard had a long and varied work history; he worked as a farmer, bus driver, and finally settled into a long career as a heavy equipment operator.
Burnard is survived by his daughters, Bernadette Henry of Seattle, Wash.; Karlajoyce (Daryl) Sturre-Koenig of Fargo, N.D.; and Paula (Larry) Jensen of Guthrie; sons, Neal (Barbara) of Shoreview; Nathan (Petie) of St. Paul; Daryl (Lauren) of Hilton Head, S.C.; and Anthony (Wendy) of Fargo, N.D.; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and siblings Gerald, Avis, Enzely, Doris “Venetta”, Marlene and Herman “Curtis.”
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathleen; daughter, Anna (Robert) Schlaepfer; granddaughters, Christina Ibarra and Laura Sturre; parents,  Herman and Doris (Phelps) Sturre; and siblings, Janice Sturre Hanson and Kenneth Sturre.
