Middle River- Esther L. Young, 88, died at her home in Middle River where she had been cared for by her family on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 22 at First Lutheran Church in Middle River, with Pastor David Peterson officiating. Casket bearers included Marc Schenkey, Mike Schenkey, Randy Rose, Jordan Holm, T. J. Super and Brett Willett .
Esther Lorene Young was born Jan. 9, 1925, in Midland, S.D. to Frank and Esther (Neihoff) Winkler. Lorene graduated from high school in Onida, S.D., in 1943 and married Kenneth R. Bortner. To this union a child was born, Angel Star (Dolly) Bortner in 1944.
In 1946, Lorene married Claude L. Wright in Pierre, S.D., who passed away in 1974. While married to Claude, who was in the military. During that time, they served in Germany for three years and toured several countries in Europe. They moved to rural Middle River in 1968 when Claude retired from the military. Lorene married Howard Young in September of 1976, who passed away in 2000. While married to Howard they liked to travel and she loved working at Young’s Store every day. She enjoyed visiting with the customers and was always bringing pies to the store and for community events.
She is survived by her daughter: Dolly (Dennis) Whitman, of Middle River; stepchildren: Patsy Young and Bobby (Steve) Holm, both of Middle River; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren, in addition to several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Lorene was preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, two brothers and one sister.
