Regina Halvorson was born Sept. 27, 1914 in Highlanding Township, Pennington County, near Erie, the daughter of Henry Conrad and Ingeborg “Emma” (Dahle) Halvorson. She was baptized by Reverend S.T. Palm at Lund Lutheran Church, Gully, and confirmed at Nazareth Lutheran Church, rural Trail. She grew up and attended Woodview School in Hickory Township. Regina worked in the area for sometime and later worked in Bemidji for a short time.
On Sept. 27, 1941, Regina was united in marriage to Marvin Gustafson at her parent’s home because there was so much flooding that year that they couldn’t get to the church. Rev. Halvor Lee from Nazareth Lutheran Church married them. The couple made their home in Thief River Falls, in 1944. They were able to celebrate 61 years of marriage and Marvin passed away on March 8, 2003.
Regina was a true career woman. She briefly worked at Red Owl Café, worked many years at J.C. Penny’s and Bjorkman’s Clothing Store, and later, worked in the sewing department at Arctic Cat. All of her employers would comment that she was, “One of their best workers.”
During the summer of 1983, she enjoyed a three-week visit to her grandparents homestead in Norway with her cousin, Signe Miller. They stayed there with their relatives and toured many family historical sites.
Regina and Marvin enjoyed eight years of wintering in Yuma, Ariz. She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Church Circle, Sons of Norway, and Rebekah’s Circle all in Thief River Falls. Regina enjoyed visiting with family and friends, cooking and baking – especially making lefse, but most of all she enjoyed shopping. She could “out shop” her daughter, daughter-in-law, and granddaughters.
She is survived by children: Arlen (Carol) Gustafson, Thief River Falls, Angeline (John) Myerchin, Banning, CA; four grandchildren, Laura (Darrel) Edgar, Kathy (Bruce) Wismer, Joseph Myerchin and Mark Kezar; five-great grandchildren, Joseph, Adam, Ashley, Joshua, Alisa Jo; sisters, Helen Pitchford, Alvina Jablinski, and Delores Lee; sisters-in-law, Stella Halvorson and Mildred Howard; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
