Darlene was born on Friday, Sept. 25, 1936, as the nursery rhyme goes this held true for Darlene all of her life, Friday’s child was loving and giving. Darlene was the second child born to Harry and Tillie (Miramontes) Sampson. She was born at home in the SW1/4NW1/4 of section 8 of Adgar Township in Marshall County.
Music and dance were a part of Darlene’s childhood. In the mid-forties Darlene, her sisters, Arlene (Tootsie) and Harriet sang together while Harriet played the guitar. The threesome made their debut on the local radio station.
When Darlene was in the ninth grade at Sunny Side School her parents were in a terrible car accident along Ditch 18 as a result of this accident Darlene had to put her education a side and take the roll of caregiver for her mother and baby Holly as her father was away, working.
After her mother had recovered from the accident, Darlene moved to town and stayed with Grandma and Grandpa Miramontes on Arnold Avenue. While staying with them, she got a job at Johnnie’s Café. When her shifts were done, her Grandpa would walk up town and meet her and walk back home with her.
Darlene’s next job was at St Luke’s Hospital. She was employed there along with her sister Arlene. They both stayed across LaBree Avenue at the Nurse’s house.
On Nov. 3, 1956, Darlene took Arden DuChamp’s hand in marriage at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Thief River Falls. The couple lived in Thief River Falls before moving to the Minneapolis area in the mid ’60s. After some time, Darlene and her family moved back to Thief River Falls and built their own home in Adger Township in Marshall County. Working side by side with her husband, they also started Duchamp Electric in Thief River Falls, where Darlene mostly managed the books.
In 1982, they moved back to and worked in the Minneapolis area until Darlene underwent back surgery and suffered a stroke. She was unable to work after this tragedy in 2002.
Some of Darlene’s favorite pastimes were baking, hunting, woodwork and sawing lawn ornaments, making crafts, playing cards and listening to music. She was also an avid archer and bowler, and she loved spending time at the Fourtown cabin and with her granddaughters, family and friends.
She is survived by her loving husband Arden of Thief River Falls; three children, Joleen (Louis) Stine, Deanna Duchamp, and Joseph Duchamp, all of Thief River Falls; grandchildren, Ashlyn, Jasmyn, Denise, Amy, and special granddaughter, Rachel; sisters, Harriet Phillip of Thief River Falls, Arlene (David) Mueller of Lake Minnatonka, Geraldine (Don) Sollom of Thief River Falls, and Holly (Jim) Drouillard of Trail; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, infant sister, and brother-in-law Harry Phillip.
