Thief River Falls - Mary Dormer, 69, of Thief River Falls, died on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 at Hillcrest Senior Living in Red Lake Falls.
An open house visitation in honor of Mary will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls.
Mary Helen Dormer was born on March 2, 1943 in Albany, N.Y., the daughter of Steven and Florence (Frenk) Dormer. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and later in the Episcopalian faith.  Mary graduated from Holy Cross Academy in New York, N.Y.; received a BA in Teaching from Kean University in Union, N.J., and earned her Master’s Degree in English from the University of Arkansas.
Mary founded and ran a genealogical publication named Down East Ancestry in Machias, for 20 years.  For the last 30 years of her life, Mary lived and worked as a surrogate parent and friend of the Dr. Maile Roper family.  She was an integral part of the extended family and took great pride in the accomplishments of the four children, Elizabeth Roper, Thomas Roper, William Roper and Corey Roper.
She enjoyed reading, coloring, thrift shopping with Ruth McDowell, and especially enjoyed her time with the Roper family. Despite her aversion to technology, Mary learned text communications to support her niece in Long Island, N.Y., who had adopted several special needs children from around the world.
Mary will be missed by her many, many relatives and friends in New York, New Jersey, Minnesota, Maine, and Massachusetts.   Mary was loved by all, witty and gracious, and always there with a helping hand and a kind word.
Survivors include her dear friend, Dr. Maile Roper of Thief River Falls; children, Elizabeth Roper of Boston, Mass., Thomas (Leah Schroeder) Roper of Durham, N.C., William (Tracy Landry) Roper, and Corey Roper all of Thief River Falls; grandchildren, Madeline Roper, Gertrude Roper, Micaiah Landry, Mason Roper; brother, Steven (Eileen) Dormer of NJ; sister, Betty Ann Fitzgerald of Queens, N.Y.; 12 nieces and nephews; and 26 great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
