Thief River Falls - Arlo August Scholin, 84, of Thief River Falls, died on Monday, Dec. 17, 2012 at his residence in the arms of his loving wife, Erna.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 21 at Black River Lutheran Church, rural St. Hilaire. Casket bearers include Ken Asp, David Erickson, Jeremy Jagol, Paul Mosbeck, Mark Sorvig, and Lyle Swanson. Honorary casket bearers include all of Arlo’s friends throughout the years. Interment will follow in Black River Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service on Thursday, Dec. 20 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls.
Arlo August Scholin was born on Feb. 22, 1928 in Warren, the son of Sven August and Alvina Theresia (Erickson) Scholin. He was baptized at Black River Lutheran Church and confirmed in 1942 at Black River Lutheran Church.
Arlo received an Advanced Certificate from the University of Minnesota’s Northwest School of Agriculture (AC), Crookston, on March 23, 1945.
On June 30, 1957, Arlo was united in marriage to Erna Carol Flatgard at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Oklee. He did seasonal farm work in Humboldt, bulldozing and ditching contracting; and farming practice in Bray Township.
Arlo enjoyed playing Pinochle in Texas, golfing, bowling, creative inventor and tinkerer, quiet and humble, enjoyed traveling to southeast and southwest United States, Mexico, Alaska, Sweden, and Norway.
He was a member of the Black River Lutheran Church and Bray Township boards for many years; served as Investment Club Treasurer for nearly 20 years; served on the St. Hilaire Elevator Co-op Board for many years. Arlo’s family received the University of Minnesota/Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station Farm Family of the Year, Pennington County in 1996. In 2003, he and Erna received the Minnesota RRVDA Valley Farmer & Homemaker Award.
He is survived by his wife Erna Carol (Flatgard) Scholin; two children, Jocy Carol (Scholin) Teske, husband Greg of North Oaks, and Thomas August Scholin, wife Lucy of rural Thief River Falls; three grandchildren: Reed J. Teske, Darian Carol Teske, Kayden August Scholin; and one sister, Elna (Scholin) Lindblom of Clearwater, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Leroy and Einar Scholin; nieces and nephews, Sharon, Duane, Denise, Donna, Alvin and Taylor.
