Roseau - Russell William Mitterling, 87, died Saturday, Nov. 24 at LifeCare Manor in Roseau.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 30 at the Roseau Baptist Church.
Russell William Mitterling, the son of Marie (Wayrynen) and Levi Mitterling was born on Jan. 26, 1925 in Steele, N.D. He attended school in Steele until he was 14 years old. His family then moved to Pencer Township in Roseau County and he attended the Beaver School. Russell enlisted in the United States Army on May 31, 1946, served in World War II, and was honorably discharged on Nov. 10, 1947.
On Dec. 13, 1947, Russell married Pearl Grindahl at the Bethel Covenant Church in Falun. They lived in Malung and were married for nearly 65 years.
Russell first worked on the Palmer Olson farm and then for the Row Lumber Company. He was custodian for the Malung School from 1967-1988. He also raised mink during this time. After his retirement he continued to trap and do taxidermy work.
Russell loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting. He served as a deacon and a trustee of the Baptist church. He also taught Sunday School and served on the church council during the construction of the past two Baptist parishes. He and Pearl were always willing to lend a hand at church when needed and enjoyed volunteering. Together they were church custodians for several years.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Pearl; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Levi Mitterling, and his brother Lester.
