Middle River - Gladys Nelson, 79, of Middle River, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 at Oakland Park Nursing Home, Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 16 at First Lutheran Church in Middle River. Casket bearers included Andy Brons, Patrick Brons, Mark Bontty, Richard Kostrzewski, Eric Barber and Sam Fortuno. Interment was held at First Lutheran Cemetery in Middle River.
Gladys Alvina Nelson, the daughter of the late Glen and Fannie (Morehouse) Custiss, was born on Oct. 30, 1933, in Whiteford Township of Marshall Co., near Middle River. She attended school and grew to womanhood in the Middle River community and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. On March 27, 1951, Gladys was united in marriage to Wallace R. Nelson.
Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Middle River for 20 years and in 1973, moved to their farm in Spruce Valley Township of Marshall Co., near Middle River. Wally passed away May 31, 1996, and Gladys continued to live in her home on the farm Gladys was a life-long member of First Lutheran Church of Middle River and a 50 year member of the Middle River American Legion Auxiliary.
She enjoyed knitting, Crocheting and other handiwork and enjoyed time spent with her family and especially her grandchildren. Gladys has resided at Oakland Park Nursing Home in Thief River Falls since October.
She is survived by her daughter: Susan (Dave) Hiersche, of Portland Ore.; two sons: Ricky (Stacey) Nelson of Strandquist, and Terry (Julie) Nelson, of Middle River; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Gordon (Kay Uhlig) Curtiss, also of Middle River; four sisters: Joy Thompson, of Estacada, Ore.; Fern (Dean) Ornquist and Linda (Keith) Gram, both of Middle River; and Gloria (Curt) Barber of Thief River Falls; in addition to several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one son: Curtiss.
