Viking - Irene Grandstrand, 90, died Thursday Nov. 15, 2012 at Sanford Hospital, Fargo, N.D.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 19, at Zion Lutheran Church in Viking, with Rev. Mary Lundquist officiating. Casket bearers included Irene’s Grandsons, Brian, Bradley, Corey, Jeremy, Jason, Earl and Dean. Honorary casket bearers included Irene’s Granddaughters, Angela, Stacey, Cheri, Valerie and Brenda. Interment was held at the Viking Cemetery in Viking.
Irene Eleanor Lindstrom Grandstrand was born on Nov. 19, 1921 Wright Township, rural Strandquist, the daughter of John and Dora (Severson) Lindstrom. She attended grade school and high school in Strandquist. Irene was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith.
On Dec. 31, 1940, Irene was united in marriage to Melvin A. Grandstrand at the Viking Mission Covenant Church Parsonage in Viking, by Pastor Samuel T. Berg. Following their marriage they lived for a short time in the Halma, area – later moving to Augsburg Township in Marshall County where they farmed until 1948. In November 1948, they purchased a farm at Viking, where Irene lived up until the time of her death. Irene was involved in every aspect of their farm. Melvin passed away on January 22, 2008.
In her younger years she enjoyed crocheting, embroidery work, baking, gardening, and canning. She loved to pick wild berries and made many jars of jelly for her family and others. Another love of Irene’s was entertaining company. She always had her freezers stacked with many delicious items.
Irene was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Viking for 64 years where she served in various positions and was involved with many church activities such as quilting, altar care, Ladies Aid, and WELCA. Irene was a volunteer for Social Services for 13 years and received the honor of “Volunteer of the Year.” For several years she was an employee at Arctic Cat in Thief River Falls.
Irene will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother. The time spent with her family and the meals she prepared will never be forgotten.
Irene is survived by her children, Barb (Ward) Sinn of Thief River Falls, Rodney (Carolyn) Grandstrand of Maple Plain, and Keith Grandstrand of Coon Rapids; grandchildren, Angela (Jim) Hoglo, Stacey Berberich, Cheri (Wayne) Morris, Valerie (Gary) Enfield, Brenda (Jim) Theishafer, Brian (Patty) Grandstrand, Bradley (Tammy) Grandstrand, Corey (Tracey) Grandstrand, Jeremy (Brenda) Grandstrand, Jason Grandstrand , Earl Grandstrand, and Dean (Patti) Grandstrand; 28 great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; son, Roy; sister, Grace Lundin, brothers, Glen, Alton, and Herman.
