Elko - Joyce Elaine (Brodin) Thyren went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by family on Oct. 1, 2012 at the The Lodge Assisted Living Facility in Elko, at the age of 86.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 5 in Bloomington. Interment was at the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
Joyce was born on June 4, 1926 in Thief River Falls, to Anna M. (Johnson) and August V. Brodin. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls and later attended Northwestern College in Minneapolis. She married Donald Thyren on Aug. 10, 1946 and lived in Thief River Falls until 1983 when they moved to Moorhead. After Donald’s death in 1994, she later moved to Minneapolis in 2001.
Joyce enjoyed baking, sewing, making quilts for weddings and graduations of family members, and sewing for orphanages in Haiti. She made the best loaves of cinnamon bread and kept them in her freezer to give to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren when they came to visit. Her love for the Lord and her family was her main focus throughout her life. She was very active in the Women’s Ministry, teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir at the Thief River Falls Covenant Church.
She is survived by her children, Wayne (Mary Joyce) Thyren of Maple Grove, Jewell (Dale) Van de Loo of Rosemount, Mark (Jeannie) Thyren of Lakeville, Joy (Ron) Johnson of Roseau, Jean (Tom) Peterson of Chicago, Ill., and Judy (Jeff) Johnson of Ann Arbor, Mich.; 14 grandchildren, Lana (Dan), Jennifer (Dale), Sarah (Jeremy), Jason (Tami), Melissa (Jon), Stephanie (Dave), Stacy (Andy), Ryan, Paul (Michelle), Kyle (Michele), Angie, Michelle, Chelsea and Abbey; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Rodney (Marian) Brodin; step-brothers, Floyd (Charlotte) Brodin and Fred Brodin; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Donald.
