    Tucson, Ariz. - Trygve R. Johnson, 88,  died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012 under hospice care in Tucson, Ariz.
    A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations in his name may be sent to an organization of your choice.
    He was born Sept 6, 1924 in Fertile to John and Emma Johnson, graduating from high school in 1942. He joined the 28th Infantry Division of the Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
    After his discharge from the Army, Trygve married Penrhyn Nelson of Thief River Falls on Sept 4, 1948. They lived in St Paul while Trygve was attending the U of M. He graduated in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
    In 1951, he began his employment with IBM, eventually residing in Rochester, where they happily raised their daughter and son. He retired in 1985 after 34 years with IBM.
    Trygve was an avid woodworker and model ship builder. He also served on the Eagle Scout Board of Review. Vacations were spent tent camping in favorite places, including the Tetons, Yellowstone and northern Minnesota. The tent evolved to a shared cabin with Rochester families on Third Crow Wing Lake. Then Penny and Trig began RV traveling, which led to Tucson where they remained for over 20 years with other snowbird friends. Trygve was a member of the Southern Arizona Chapter of Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, the Ardennes.
    He is survived by daughter Linda Slagter, Moorhead, and son Steve (Susan), of Billings, Mont.; three grandchildren, Brian, Todd and Spencer; and four great-grandchildren.
    Trygve was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; four brothers; and wife Penny.
