Thief River Falls - Lyle J. Cote, 85, of Thief River Falls, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012 at the Manor Care Health Services Nursing Home in Fargo, N.D.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 27, 2012 at St. John Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, with Rev. Aaron Zuch officiating. Casket bearers included Brent Burns, Alan Cassavant, Brent Gaber, Robert Kappelhoff, Jacob DeHaan and Larry Weiss. Honorary casket bearers included Lyle’s grandchildren. Interment was held at Immanuel Cemetery, Wylie Township, Red Lake County.
Lyle was born on Feb. 18, 1927, in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph and Bessie (Guyette) Cote. He grew up in that area and attended school in Beaver Center.
On Jan. 11, 1958, Lyle was united in marriage to Gloria R. Hinrichs in Winchester, VA. To this union four children were born, Barbara, Martin, Dale and Tammy. They made their home in Red Lake Falls, residing there until they moved to Thief River Falls in 2001.
Lyle sailed for 35 years on the U.S. Steel ore carrier ships on the Great Lakes. He started as a coal passer and worked his way up the ranks until he became a chief engineer. He retired in 1989. Then he continued employment at American Crystal Sugar and finally finished his working years at the ODC in Thief River Falls.
In his later years, Lyle devoted much of his attention to the apples of his eye, his grandchildren. He loved animals, especially his two cats, Cornelius and Little Kitty. He also enjoyed working with steam engines and doing mechanical tinkering, and gardening with his beloved wife, “Squeak!” Thoughout his life, Lyle was well known for his silly sense of humor and habit of assigning nicknames to everyone.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Gloria of Thief River Falls; children, Rhonda Adamson of Jacksonville, Fla., Barbara Cote of Columbus, Ohio, Martin Cote of Thief River Falls, and Tammy Cassavant of Thief River Falls; grandchildren, Jen (Brent) Burns of Plymouth, MN and Karly Cassavant of Thief River Falls; great-grandson Jayce Burns of Plymouth; brothers, Albert Cote of Buffalo, N.Y., and Homer Cote of Conneautville, Pa.; sister Ellen Parsons of Conneautville, Pa.: and many other family members and friends.
Lyle was preceded in death by his son Dale; grandchild, Matthew Dale Cote; daughter Teri Stovall; brothers and sisters, William Cote, Irene Fina, Clifford Cote, Clarence Cote and Forrest Cote. A00003B2012SP05
