Thief River Falls - Lyle Cote, 85, of Thief River Falls, died on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012 at the Manor Care Health Services Nursing Home in Fargo, N.D.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 27, 2012 at St. John Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, with Rev. Aaron Zuch officiating. Casket bearers included Brent Burns, Alan Cassavant, Brent Gaber, Robert Kappelhoff, Jacob DeHaan and Larry Weiss. Honorary casket bearers included all of Lyle’s grandchildren. Interment was held at Immanuel Cemetery, Wylie Township, Red Lake County.
Lyle Joseph Cote was born Feb. 18, 1927 in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph and Bessie (Guyette) Cote. He attended school in Beaver Center in Pennsylvania.
Lyle worked for 35 years on the U.S. Steel Iron Ore ships on the Great Lakes. He started as a Coal Passer, and throughout the years worked his way through the ranks until he became a Chief Engineer. He retired in 1989. Following retirement, Lyle returned home where he continued his employment at American Crystal Sugar and finished out his working years at the ODC in Thief River Falls.
On Jan. 11, 1958, Lyle was united in marriage to Gloria Hinrichs at Winchester, Va. To this union, four children were born, Barbara, Martin, Dale, and Tammy. They made their home in Red Lake Falls, residing there until they moved to Thief River Falls in 2000.
Lyle Cote spent the later years in his life spending time with the “Apples of his eye,” his grandchildren. Being mechanically inclined, Lyle liked working with his steam engines, gardening, and fixing machinery. He enjoyed helping area farmers with any broken machinery. Lyle was avid lover of animals, especially his beloved cats.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Gloria of Thief River Falls; children, Rhonda Adamson of Jacksonville, Fla., Barbara Cote of Columbus, Ohio, Martin Cote of Thief River Falls, and Tammy Cassavant of Thief River Falls; grandchildren, Deanna Gates, Jason Gates, Tammy Stovall, Jen (Brent) Burns of Plymouth, and Karly Cassavant of Thief River Falls; great-grandchildren, Jayce, Kaitlyn, Connor, Artie, and Magen; brothers, Albert Cote of Buffalo, N.Y., and Homer Cote of Conneautville, Pa; sister, Ellen Parsons of Conneautville, Pa.; several nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Preceding him in death are his son, Dale; grandchild, Matthew Dale Cote; brothers and sisters, William Cote, Irene Fina, Clarence Cote, and Forrest Cote.
