Thief River Falls - Kenneth Dunrud, 85, died Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at Thief River Care Center, Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 23, at St. Bernard’s Church, Thief River Falls, with Father Rick Lambert presiding. Casket bearers included Brian Krantz, Philip Krantz, Brock Dunrud, Jeremy Johnson, Daran Solbreken and Thomas Lee. Honorary casket bearers included Lisa Solbreken, Sarah Lee, Karey Johnson, Miranda Dunrud, Christopher Knutson, Shane Knutson, and all of the great-grandchildren. Military honors were provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2793, American Legion Ecklund-Holmstrom Post 117 and the Minnesota National Guard Honor Guard. Interment was held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
Kenneth LeRoy Dunrud was born Feb. 15, 1927 in Muskegon, Mich., the son of Olaf Christ and Lillis Lorena (Casler) Dunrud. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith in Muskegon, Mich. At the age of 5, his family moved to northwest Minnesota. He attended the Windsor Country School near Gonvick. He went to accounting school in Bemidji.
Ken served his country in the United States Navy going in at age 17.
On Nov. 14, 1949, Kenneth was united in marriage to Marcella Ann Rose, in Grafton, N.D.
He worked at Lakehead Pipeline Company including Griffith, Ind., Clearbrook, Bemidji, and Viking. He retired in 1987 after 35 years.
He was a past commander and quartermaster of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2793, Thief River Falls, a member of the Military Order of Cooties and a member of American Legion Ecklund-Holmstrom Post 117 in Thief River Falls.
Kenneth was a life member of the VFW; he worked with many programs, including transporting veterans to medical appointments, which he happily did for 14 years. He faithfully arranged and served in the honor guard for veteran funerals for many years.
In his earlier years, gardening, fishing, hunting, pitching horseshoes, and small engine repairs. He donated many gallons of blood through his lifetime. After retiring, Ken also enjoyed wood working and bowling.
He is survived by his wife, Marcella, Thief River Falls; five children: Kathryn Sundstedt, Montevideo, Karen (Randy) Krantz, Karlstad, Michael (Teri) Dunrud, Thief River Falls, Steven Dunrud, Viking and Craig (Roxanne) Dunrud, Viking; seven grandchildren: Lisa (Daran) Solbreken, Brooten, Sarah (Thomas) Lee, Belgrade, Brian (Donelle) Krantz, Argyle, Philip Krantz, Strandquist, Karey (Jeremy) Johnson, Goodridge, Brock (Mindy) Dunrud, Viking, Miranda (fiancé, Austin Knoll) Radium; and step-grandchildren: Shane Knutson, Thief River Falls and Chris Knutson, Newfolden; 13 great-grandchildren: Tiana and Jacob Solbreken, Tyler and Madison Lee, Britni, Crysta and Kandis Krantz, Keegan, Rylie and Tucker Krantz, Liberty and Jordon Johnson and Baylie Dunrud; a sister: Eleanor Sundquist, Clearbrook and several nieces, nephews, friends and other family members.
He was preceded in death by parents, sisters: Iola Anderson and Anna May (Narveson) Rindal; son-in-law: Wayne Sundstedt (2012); brothers-in-law: Orrin Anderson, Arnold Narveson and Edward Sundquist.
