Gary Rux was born April 6, 1953 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Thief River Falls, the son of Gail and Lillian (Johnson) Rux. He attended school in Thief River Falls, then St. Hilaire and graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls in 1971. Gary drove school bus for a short time after high school, and then entered the U.S. Army for a short time but was honorably discharged due to asthma. Following his discharge, he returned to Thief River Falls and worked on the Railroad and at Larson Music.
Gary met his future wife, Shirley Ann Walhaug, while he was performing at Hanson’s Bar in Plummer. The two quickly fell in love, and after dating a couple years, they were united in marriage at Salem Lutheran Church near Oklee on April 6, 1974. Gary and Shirley made their home in Thief River Falls, where they raised their children Taryn “Tari” and Trenton “T.J.”
At 22 years old, Gary opened an office in Thief River Falls for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, which he owned and operated until September 2011, when his courageous battle with cancer began. He received numerous awards and various achievements during his career with Northwestern Mutual and took a lot of pride in being one of the top agents in the country. Gary was very passionate about his work, loved what he did, and called many of his clients “friends.”
On Nov. 15, 1992 Gary was fortunate enough to receive a heart transplant which extended his life just short of 20 years.
Gary has enjoyed music, wood carving, painting, both summer and winter fishing, hunting and spending time at the cabin just to get away.
In the past 15 years though his Harley Davidson Motorcycles have been his passion. He bragged about riding 12,000-plus miles per year and has ridden his Harley in all of the contiguous 48 states with plans to travel to Alaska and Hawaii to travel in them all. He was a member of the Northriders Motorcycle Club, the Thief River Falls Eagles, and Trinity Lutheran Church. In the past he was a member of the Elks, and Jaycees. Gary was a true salesman no matter if it was insurance or jelly.
Gary is survived by his children Taryn and TJ (Kari Nelson); grandchildren Aron and Gannon; mother Lillian Rux, all of Thief River Falls; cousin/“brother” Kevin Rux of Apple Valley; friend Matt Dehne; and all of his Northrider brothers.
He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley on June 15, 2011, father Gail Rux on April 5, 2011 and brother Allen Rux on May 5, 2001.
