Gary - Joanne “Joey” (LaFriniere) Simonson, age 66, of Gary, and formerly of Thief River Falls, died Thursday, April 12, 2012 at Sanford Health in Fargo, N.D.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18 (today) at the Anderson-Mattson Funeral Home in Mahnomen.
Joanne Marcia LaFriniere, daughter of Theodore and Lillian (Enmark) LaFriniere, was born on April 19, 1945 in Mahnomen. She grew up and attended school in Mahnomen. As a young woman, Joey moved to Thief River Falls, where she worked as a waitress. She was later employed with Arctic Cat for many years.
On Nov. 20, 1992, Joey was united in marriage to Larry Simonson and the couple made their home near Flom. Over the years, she also worked at the Naytahwaush Sewing Factory and with Lena’s Lefse. Larry and Joey moved into Gary, about three years ago. She was most recently working at Pinehurst Resort, near Naytahwaush, until her cancer diagnosis last summer prevented her from working.
Joey loved flowers and had beautiful gardens around her yard. By far, her favorite pastime was going to the Casino and she loved to try her luck with the slot machines. She treasured animals and had a special place in her heart for her pet cats.
She is survived by her husband, Larry of Gary; four sisters: Muriel (Vergil) Mercil of Thief River Falls, Lois Larson of Silver Bay, Audrey (Dick) LaVoy of Naytahwaush, and Sharon (Sydney) Bonaime of Thief River Falls; one sister-in-law, Loma Gullingsrud of Biwabik; her in-laws, Lyle and Joyce Simonson of Gary; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jim and Michael; and one sister, Phyllis.
