New York Mills - Evelyn Tervo, 88, of New York Mills, died at Sanford Health in Fargo, N.D. on Thursday, March 29, 2012 after a brief illness.
?Funeral services were held on Monday, April 2, at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills, with Pastor Reino Maunu officiating. Casket bearers were Tim Tumberg, Todd Tumberg, Scott Tumberg, Daryl Tumberg, Reece Tumberg and Rodney Mursu. Evelyn was laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery, New York Mills.
Evelyn G. Tumberg Tervo was born on July 13, 1923 at home in Deer Creek Township, rural New York Mills. She was the daughter of Hjalmer and Ida (Fiskari) Tumberg.
She was baptized at home as an infant, was confirmed and was a lifelong member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church. Evie attended Leaf River Country School, District 136, where she participated in the State Spelling Contest. She graduated from New York Mills High School with the Class of 1942. Shortly after graduation, she was employed in Detroit, Michigan for several years. Returning to New York Mills Evie was employed at the Heinola Telephone Company, then Northwestern Bell in Wadena.
On Oct. 17, 1964 Evelyn was united in marriage with Albert Tervo at the Hjalmer Tumberg home in rural New York Mills. This union was blessed with one daughter, Renae Beth.
Together they made their home in Plummer, until 2003 when they moved to Kaleva Apartments in New York Mills.
Her hobbies included: embroidery, baking, cooking and crossword puzzles. She was an avid sports fan, and most importantly she loved being called “Grandma.”
Preceding Evie in death was her husband, Albert on May 8, 2007; her parents, Hjalmer and Ida Tumberg; brothers, Howard, Arnold, Robert and Gordon; one sister and two brothers in infancy; niece, Lori; nephew, Craig; great-nephew, Kip; and great-nieces, Jamae and Raina.
Evie is survived by her daughter, Renae and Robb Vaules; grandson, Anderson Charles Vaules; sister, Helen (Martin) Mursu; brothers: Clifford (Anne) Tumberg; Andrew (Janet) Tumberg; Jimmie (Nancy) Tumberg; Earl (Julia) Tumberg; sister-in-law, Pat Tumberg; and their families.
