In 2009, after many years of service to the youth and community of Thief River Falls, the Little Brother Little Sister program of Pennington County ceased to exist. Now, a local group of citizens is hoping to revive the organization.
April Ballard, who has taken up the effort to revive the program, said her dad and uncle were Big Brothers. Forty years later, she said her uncle still remains in contact with the youth he mentored in the program.

Residents of Thief River Falls and the surrounding communities will have the opportunity to attend a variety of events starting Thursday, July 31. Within a six-day period, Movie in the Park; RiverFest, Crazy Day, the Pioneer 5K and 10K Run, Walk and Roll In Color; the Street Wizards Car and Motorcycle Show; and Night to Unite will be held in Thief River Falls. As usual on a summer Saturday morning, the Thief River Falls Farmers Market will also be held.

According to allaboutbirds.org, the House Wren is a common backyard bird found over nearly the entire Western Hemisphere. Wrens will gladly use nestboxes, or find their twig-filled nests in old cans, boots, or boxes lying around. Mike Lundgren of The Times spotted a lot of activity around a birdhouse he built for Wrens in his backyard. Upon investigation, he found out why there was so much activity around the birdhouse.

The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF2 tornado touched down Monday night in Polk and Red Lake counties. No injuries were reported.
The tornado, with peak wind gusts estimated at 120 mph, tracked about 37 miles from southwestern Polk County to southwestern Red Lake County. NWS believes the tornado touched down about four miles north/northwest of Eldred at about 8:50 p.m. Monday and ended within an hour about nine miles east/southeast of Red Lake Falls. NWS indicated that the damage path ended about halfway between Plummer and Brooks, one mile west of U.S. Highway 59.
