Lincoln High School junior Tracy Mehrkens created this colored pencil drawing for the 2010 Minnesota Aviation Art Contest. She won second place in the Ages 14-17 division of the contest. (From the Minnesota Department of Transportation Web site) Tracy Mehrkens is flying to new heights after completing a colored pencil drawing. She received second place in the Ages 14-17 category of the 2010 Minnesota Aviation Art Contest. “I was very surprised,”?said Mehrkens with a laugh. “I didn’t really expect to win.” The high school junior created the drawing last quarter in her Visual Arts class, which is a part of the Magnet Arts program at Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls. “It’s a colored pencil drawing of a little boy sitting in a toy plane, kind of like those toy cars,” said Mehrkens. The boy is watching a jet pass by. “The theme was ‘My Dream to Fly,’ and I thought that captured the theme really well,” she said. |

Northland relied on a front line trio of Whitney Langen, Brittany Wiseth and Cassie Gunderson to reach the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 13B playoff game. Saturday, a different threesome took the Pioneers a step farther – to the NJCAA Division III national tournament. Together, Langen, Wiseth and Gunderson had just five field goals in the national-qualifier against Rainy River. But Bridget Lunde came up with a monster 29-point afternoon, while Tiffany McMillan and Danelle Schommer made key plays in the final minute as the Pioneers edged their Minnesota College Athletic Conference Northern Division rival 55-52. The win sends 19-12 Northland to the national tournament for the second time in four years and third time overall. |
