Wednesday, Feb. 1, hoar frost formed a frame around everything, including the decorative plantings around Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls. Northwest Minnesota has been experiencing a warmer than usual winter. The National Weather Service reported Grand Forks International Airport recorded its fourth-warmest average temperature for January, at 16.7 degrees. The forecast for Saturday and Sunday calls for highs in the low to mid 30s, and lows in the teens. |

The Thief River Falls Evangelical Free Church is sponsoring a missions trip to Liberia from Feb. 18 through 27. (From left)?Pastor Bruce Fischer, Stacy Barnhart and Jenelle Espe are participating in the trip. Years ago, God put in Stacy Barnhart’s heart to participate in missions trips. However, she was a single mom with young children at the time. Now remarried and with her kids a little bit older, Barnhart is ready. “God said, ‘You know what, Stacy? It’s time,’” she said. From Feb. 18 through 27, Barnhart, Jenelle Espe and Pastor Bruce Fischer will be on a missions trip to the outskirts of Monrovia, Liberia. This is one of several missions trips to Liberia sponsored by the Thief River Falls Evangelical Free Church. Barnhart and Espe are parishioners there. Fischer is the lead pastor at the church. Barnhart and Espe, registered nurses, will spend most of their time at a parochial school. “We’ll be doing some childhood screenings,” Barnhart said. |

Members of the Board of Education in Thief River Falls looked at designs for improvements to Challenger Elementary School and Lincoln High School on Monday. Members of the Board liked what they saw, describing the improvements as “practical.” Shane Zutz, principal at Lincoln?High School, said they started with a blank slate, listened to staff, teachers and students and tried to come up with a design that would create space for many uses. The design shows the new entrance on the south end of the school. This design improves safety by giving school officials more control over who comes and goes at the school. The plan also shows an expanded commons and cafeteria area, and new administrative offices near the very front of the entrance. The old administrative offices at the front of the school have been expanded into lobby areas for the theater. The outside appearance of the south entrance will mirror the Art Deco look of the old entrance. Designers also said they will try to match the brick. (The physical appearance of the old entrance will not be changed.)

Crookston put an end to a 15-game Thief River Falls girls high school basketball winning streak Friday, 57-56. The Prowlers didn’t go down without a fight. Trailing by 16 with eight minutes to play, they battled back and had a last second shot for a streak-extending win. It was the first setback for the 16-3 Prowlers since a Dec. 6 loss to Bemidji. “Give Crookston credit,” said Thief River Falls coach Jeff Loe. “They came out ready to play. They defended us very well.”
